What are "track versions"? How do I format it in my release?

The Version of a track is used to differentiate from the original content title or to add information needed to identify the content. Are you uploading an original song, but it’s a remix? Is it an acoustic arrangement? Is it a bonus track to your album that no one has heard before? Have no fear! Simply select any of these options from the drop-down menu and it will be included in your metadata in the DSPs.

Here are some rules for you to follow regarding versions:

  • Do not enter any version information in the title of your track! This means that version titles such as “Original Mix”, “Original”, “Official”, “Album Version”, or “Single Version” are considered unnecessary. Any track that is not a remix is deemed to be an original mix by store standards, especially for electronic music.
  • Do not enter “Exclusive”. Streaming services may find this misleading.
  • Do not add Producer credits to this field. Those should be added in the credits field.

Here are some common version titles and what they mean:

Remix - This is a reworked or rearranged version of an already existing song, while still using elements of the original recording. We have a whole article on this as well.
Edit / Radio Edit - A shortened mix of your original track. Some tracks might be a bit long to be played on the radio, so artists will sometimes shorten their songs to 2-4 minutes.
Live / Ao Vivo / En Vivo - Live performances of your original song.
Bonus Track - An additional track that is subsequently added onto an EP or album’s core tracklist. Singles typically don’t have bonus tracks.
Extended - A longer arrangement of your track. DJs tend to work with extended tracks when working on DJ sets.
Alternate Version - Generally, a secondary mix of your track that has different instrumentation, structure, lyrics, etc.
Acoustic - An arrangement of your track that only uses acoustic instrumentation.
Acapella - A track or mix of a track with only vocals.Instrumental - A track or mix of a track with no vocals. You should also tag your track as instrumental when uploading your release.
Freestyle - An improvised rap or rap verse.

NOTE: Skip/Intro/Outro - should be presented in the track title and be put in parentheses, not in the version field.
